IELTS Writing Sample Band 8.0

Band 8.0

1. As computers are being used more and more on education, there will be soon no roles for teachers in the classroom.

There have been immense advances in technology in most aspects of people’s lives, especially in the field of education. Nowadays, an increasing numbers of students rely on computers to research for information and to produce a perfect paper for school purposes. Others have decided to leave the original way of learning to get knowledge through online schools. These changes in the learning process have brought a special concern regarding the possible decrease of importance of teachers in the classroom.

Some people believe the role of teachers starting to fade because computers have been helping some students to progress in their studies quicker than when compared with an original classroom. For example, in the same classroom, students have different intellectual capacities, thus some would be tied to a slow advance in their studies because of others’ incapacity of understanding. In this way, pupils could progress in their acquisition of knowledge at their own pace using computers instead of learning from teachers.

However, the presence of a teacher is essential for students because the human contact influences them in positive ways. Firstly, students realize that they are not dealing with a machine but with a human being who deserves attention and respect. They also learn the importance of studying in group and respect other students, which help them to improve their social skills.

Moreover, teachers are required in the learning process because they acknowledge some student’s deficiencies and help them to solve their problems by repeating the same explanation, giving extra exercises or even suggesting a private tutor. Hence, students can have a bigger chance not to fail in a subject.

In conclusion, the role for teachers in the learning process is still very important and it will continue to be in the future because no machine can replace the human interactions and its consequences.

2. Popular events like the football world cup and other international sporting occasions are essential in easing international tensions and releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way.

Every four years, the whole world stops to watch international sporting events such as the Olympics and the football world cup in which athletes show their best performance to make their country proud of them. These sporting occasions have proved to be helpful in easing international tensions in difficult times when powerful leaders were trying to control the world’s economy and other governments were fighting over land.

The Olympic Games are one of the best examples which prove how sporting events can bring nations together, at least temporarily. From ancient History, when Greeks and Romans would interrupt battles to participate in the games, to the more recent international disputes, when athletes from Palestine and Israel would forget their differences, compete pacifically and even embrace each other after an event.
Moreover, these popular events have called the world’s attention to the terrible consequences of wars; thus some leaders have tried to accept some leaders have tried to accept agreements to end their dispute and live peacefully.

Similarly, international sporting events show benefits in some developing countries which live in a daily internal civil war. For example, Brazil has a high rate of unemployment, lack of education, hunger, crime, poverty and corruption which leads to an immense embarrassment of being Brazilian and a low self-esteem. However, when the Football World Cup starts, the Brazilian squad, which is considered the best team in the world, provokes an amazing feeling of pride in their country. Most people seem to forget all their problems and even the criminal activity decreases. They paint roads with the national colors, wear the Brazilian team shirt and buy national flags. Moreover, the competition brings families and their neighbors together and even rival gangs watch the games and celebrate peacefully.

In conclusion, popular sporting events play an important role in decreasing international tensions and liberating patriotic feelings as History has shown.

3. Improvements in health, education and trade are essential for the development of poorer nations. However, the governments of richer nations should take more responsibility for helping the poorer nations in such areas.

Today’s world has been divided into developing and industrialised countries which the main difference between them is the amount of money that governments apply in important sectors such as education, health and commerce. Most of the poorer nations are buried in debts as a result of their unbalanced which are reflect in a failed health care, an unstructured education system and a weak international trade. This vicious cycle will continue indefinitely unless wealthier nations show interest in minimizing the worldwide economic difference, as well as taking more responsibility for assisting unfortunate countries.

Most of the African countries live in sub-human conditions because of the extreme poverty, upheaval, hunger, disease, unemployment, lack of education and both inexperienced and corrupt administrations. The devastating consequences of the AIDS epidemic in those countries could improve if the infected populations receive free drugs to control the disease, have access to health professionals and get information on how to prevent its spread. But this can only be achieved through international help programs in which leaders of the world’s richest countries donate medicine and also send doctors and nurses to treat and educate those in need.

Moreover, most of the poor countries rely on selling agricultural products and raw material to rich nations and buying industrialized products from them resulting in a huge financial deficit. Consequently, they borrow a significant amount of money from the World bank to try to improve their broken economies, but sometimes the money disappears with no significant changes and they cannot even pay the interest to the bank. Regarding this issue, last year, the G8, which is comprised of leaders of the eight richest nations, decided to forgive billions of dollars worth of debt owed by the world’s poorest nations. In addition, they developed adequate loan programs to financially assist those countries.

In conclusion, leaders of the industrialised countries play an indispensable role in assisting developing nations deal with essential areas such as health, education and trade. Also, their aid is the key to breaking the vicious cycle, which results in poverty and death.

4. Creative artists should be given freedom to express their ideas 9words, pictures, music and films). However, some people think government should take some restrictions with them. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Give your reasons with your own knowledge and give examples.

(71 words)

The responsibility of an artist is to create artworks to cater for people’s needs for aesthesis and enjoyment. Some masterpieces by the world-renowned artists like Shakespeare, the greatest poet in British literature; Vinci, the most famous Italian painter, architect and sculptor impress people around the world deeply. From my point of view, the government should not give restrictions to artists. On the contrary, their creativity and innovation should be encouraged.

Creativity is the source of arts. The development of literature is a very vivid illustration. From classicism to romanticism, from renaissance to realism, from humanity to post-modernism, all the styles of literature reflect people’s thinking and have epoch-making significance. Suppose there were only one style of literature, people would not appreciate so abundant poetry and novels and our world would become so monotonous.
Furthermore, restrictions on creativity will arouse tragedies one of which is “Burn books and bury the literati in pits” in Chinese history launched by emperor Qin shihuang, who buried the Confucian scholars alive and prohibited the dissemination of Confucian. Another tragedy was started by Emperor Yongzheng in the Qing dynasty, who killed many creative artists and intellectuals, undermining the literal development and distorting the development of humanity. History proves that only when government encourages people to express their own idea and thought freely , can its country make progress and prosper.

(unnecessary addition): Finally, I will quote a classic sentence from a famous article entitled :give me liberty or give me death” by Patrick Henry, the greatest writer in American history, “I know not what others may take; but as for me, give me liberty of give me death!”

5. People spend a great deal of time, money, and energy to see or read about movie stars. TV actors and athletes. What roles do celebrities play in society? Write an essay of about 250 words. Give specific examples.

People spend a great deal of time, money, and energy watching or reading about movie stars, TV actors, singers, and athletes. Such celebrities often become idols. Poster and T-shirt sales, fan clubs and attendance at live performances indicate their popularity. What do celebrities to merit this attention?

Celebrities create excitement. They create excitement because they have done something or can do something that supposedly not everyone can do. Raising a child, waking early to go to work each morning, building a home and a place in the community-these achievements are actually worthy of greater admiration than celebrity activities such as rolling through Beverly Hills in a limousine or jetting across the atlantic to star in a new movie. Yet because these achievements are part of many people’s everyday lives, they are not considered special. Celebrities help us dream by lifting us out of our everyday lives and imagining our selves doing other than everyday activities.

Celebrities also set styles. They become models for behavior, clothing and hairdos. Just consider Elvis Presley or the Beatles, for example. Celebrities also influence politics, as bob hope and Robert Redford have done.

Celebrities’ roles as “special people” and trendsetters, then are the reason for the attention many of us lavish on them. In many ways, the celebrities of today have merely replaced the kings and queens of old.

6. It is generally agree that society benefits from the works of its members. Compare the contributions of scientists to society. Which type of contribution do you think is valued more by your society? Give specific reasons to support your answer.

From my everyday experience and observation I think that artists as well as scientists bring many benefits to society. It is a controversial question weather the contributions of artists as well as scientists brings many benefits to society. For several reasons, which I will mention below, I think that both types are valuable, priceless and irreplaceable for every society.

The contributions of artists to the society are very essential. Art forms people’s spiritual sense, their views and personalities. People learn history, the traditions of their country trough art. We also watch movies that entertain and at the same time extend our range of interests. Another important aspect of this is that art is an ancient means of communication. In old times the people depicted the herds of mammoths on the walls of their caves. They performed different rituals around the fireplace asking their gods for health, good harvest and weather. Our language is a result of people’s need to communicate.

From the other side, the contribution of scientists is could not be exaggerated. All humankind is indebted to the scientists because of their work and achievements. Scientists, make our life easier. We have cars and airplanes to move fast from one place to another. We have microwave and a bunch of preprocessed food to make the cooking much easier. We have different devices that simplify all we do. Finally, scientists are making great achievements in medicine that make our life longer and happier. Nowadays people have a great opportunity to do many things faster by use of computers.

To sum up, I believe that artists nourish our souls when scientists and technology feed our minds. So, we can not eliminate or underestimate one of them.

7. Some people trust their first impressions about a person’s character because these judgments are generally correct. Other people do not judge a person’s character quickly because first impressions are often wrong. Compare these two attitudes. Which attitude do you agree with? Support your choice with specific examples.

Some people think that first impression about a person is the most correct. However, other people disagree and believe that first impression is often wrong. From my everyday experience and observation I can stand that the first impression about a person is very often incorrect. In the following paragraphs I will list my reasons to support my answer.

First of all, when people meet for the first time they often do not have time to get to know each other or even have a conversation. So, sometimes all they remember is how they looked. Personally, I often myself judge a person by this or her external appearance. Fortunately, I many times made sure of the incorrectness of my judgments. For example, when I met my future husband for the first time he made an impression of frown and not talkative person and, frankly speaking, I did not like him at all. We did not have a chance to talk, but his cloth and manners gave me that impression. However, after we were introduced to each other and had a long talk I changed my opinion about him. He happened to be a very sensitive and kind person.

Second of all, I believe that the true impression about a person can be made only after people spent at least a few weeks with each other and were in different situations including extreme and danger ones. I think that a person shows his or her internal characteristics when in danger. Moreover, some people, especially celebrities , tend to hide their weaknesses and not attractive sides in order to please an audience.

In conclusion, I believe that first impression is very often wrong. I must confess that I unconsciously judge a person by his or her appearance but I tell my self that this is subject to change and try to keep my opinion with me.
